In the late 1960s I was a violinist in the Leicestershire Schools Symphony Orchestra.
The LSSO was regularly conducted by its Patron, Sir Michael Tippett and other eminent figures such as Sir Adrian Boult, Sir Arthur Bliss and Andre Previn.
The orchestra made commercial recordings for the Pye, Argo, Unicorn and CBS labels. Visit the memorabilia website (link above).
My videos feature the LSSO, Oldham Music Centre and the Saddleworth Whit Friday brass band contests.

Blasmusik Style - we say ….
Was that Daniel Thomas playing for Fairy's?
How some fortunes change whilst others keep strong
Thank you very much. I enjoyed it!
that bottom second on the left one is a right bad singer
Get your kids playing brass please parents / carers. Average age of a brass band player - 51! Scary number.
Played in and followed brass bands since the late 70s...probably the most inspiring bit of banding i've ever seen. If there's one good reason to keep brass bands alive..here it is!
Thank you for the upload . Hopefully the others from the series will be available soon .
They are available on Sky
❤Delph Band . Miss you all.........
👍👍👍
28:52 funny hand shake 😊

Prachtige mars gespeeld door een prachtig orkest.
Perhaps it's worth pointing out that Chav Brass arrived past the booking in point to compete but still wanted to do the street march to entertain the crowd . I criticised the band in previous posts thinking they had held up other bands behind them without knowing the facts , for which I apologise . Regards , Mark .
Shout out to the child drinking prime. What could possibly go wrong!!!
Absolutely unbelievable. great concert.
Not a concert but I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Teenage Dirtbag conductor living his best life
Great arrangement and band too! I missed playing this year, hopefully I’ll find a band to play with next year!
@@AndrewJamesFilms totally agree with. Both comments. Sadly I didn't play that year at the evening contest. But ik The conductor of the band and some of the players there a grate band and the conductor Johnathan leedale is such a nice guy.and also funny as well 🎶🎺❤️
Great video from all those years ago . ( 25 as of the time of my comment in 2023 ) Some sadly missed people I spotted there , Ted Tooley ( founder of Uppermill Band an Shaw Youth ) , Peter Teal ( ex Brighouse & Rastrick ) and my friend ' Delphman ' Mark Rodgers playing Old Comrades on a road march with his local band .
What was the music please.
It's called Ashokan Farewell.
😢 P r o m o s m
Hi Michaels dad, how many videos do you have of us playing over the years? I'd love to see more (Emma)
Hello Emma, nice to hear from you. If you go to this playlist you will find the others (Delph and Shaw youth bands) ua-cam.com/play/PL22B1F4F1C584A638.html
@bannan61 My gosh, that's quite the library! Thank you.
Saw yous at Lees. Quality!! 👌🏼
Amazing and you can feel the atmosphere on this through the footage can't you Wow 🎉
England, my England! 😀🏴❤
Never thought I'd be lucky enough to play with a group that has that kind of response from (and connection to) the crowd. Unreal to perform in. Thank you Delph ❤
Awesome coverage as always
You are very kind. A bit truncated this year, using a mobile phone. No actual contest marches, just the village centre for a bit of a change. The Chav Brass part is my favourite clip of all time.
@@bannan61 they are amazing and so good to see thousands at Delph, you once recorded me conducting a band in Thornes park and also at the whits with another band and Morley. Always go to Your page on here morning after the whits
@@bannan61 as for Chav brass absolute world class stuff
@@Kittenwhisperer24 I first started doing this in 1984!!!!!!
Superb, thanks for sharing.
Love to come playwith you. I reckon you were 3 bands behind us at Delph. I managed to play Georgia in the pub at the end of Delph. They loved it 😂
You might know Paul Williams. I live with Woodfalls Band. You're on my bucket list!
Thanks for filming! #chavinitlarge
One of my sons did the filming. I'm a tad too geriatric to get into a crowd like that. I admired it from the bottom of Stoneswood Road. Glad you enjoyed it. We all did.
Langley Band aka The Star Wars Band at 3:48 We had great fun!
Glad you enjoyed your visit to Delph.
Awesome
Cool 😊
Amazing
Amazing 😻
Haven't seen you upload for years, welcome back Sir
Just for the record this was 4th placed . 1st was Rothwell , 2nd Fairey , 3rd Hepworth .
The ups and downs of Besses are well documented throughout the Bands 200+ year history. Besses always found a way to adapt and reinvent itself and get back to the top in banding. It is a much more difficult thing to achieve nowadays Much much more difficult ua-cam.com/video/tNuK_W2LDOk/v-deo.html
10 years prior to this performance and playing the same march Besses smacked the ball out of the park ua-cam.com/video/kG1MG11t63U/v-deo.html
Played it with Leicestershire Schools Symphony Orchestra
Indeed you did Bill way back in 1975. Do you like the piece? I love it. Thoughts on the Oldham kids performance?
@@john1951w The Oldham kids are brilliant. So vibrant. There is a shot of the horns (including tenor horns (-very Oldham!!) they are really entering into it. I remember enjoying playing it. But almost, just almost forgotten now...
@@billbrookman923 The two tenor horn players are my eldest sons. They also played in brass bands, hence the choice of instruments. My youngest son is playing Euphonium. This has always been a good wind band. Northern tradition!! Glad you enjoyed it.
Beautiful
That’s how you do it!! Like two circus parades crashing into eachother.
It was both fun and challenging to play!!
My high school choir used to perform it. Boy, we loved it!
Thats what it is ment to sound like
This is very good !!!!!
This is my great grandfather and its my dads grand father
Eric was a fantastic man. The LSSO was the finest school orchestra in Britain for decades. I will never forget my time as a teenager being inspired by Eric and his superb staff. I think you will enjoy this video I made for a reunion in Birstall in 2020. I updated it in 2017. It's all about the EP era. It's an amateur job so don't expect miracles!! look forward to your comments. ua-cam.com/video/kKb8gRMUgbg/v-deo.html
😊 who wouldn't like this!
The lad on 3rd man down is good a good job at playing he’s hardly moving his fingers lol 😂 Good job to him tho the princerpal is amazing
Bloody good chance im in that crowd somewhere as a 6 year old!!
This March is called the match of st George
RIP Joe, you are irreplaceable.
I had the privilege, as a teenager, of playing the Enigma Variations under the baton of Malcolm Fletcher, and regret not telling him, years later, of how much that meant to me. He was the most charismatic and passionate personality that I have ever know and I am indebted to him for the experience that he gave me.
He was truly inspirational when I was a youngster growing up in Leicestershire in the early 1960s. Did you work with Malcolm when he was in Antrim or London (was it Bexley or Bromley)?
Brilliant tune, always played by Dobcross Silver band at the Christmas service. Quite lovely.
Splendido suono!
We worked with Tippett a full 20 years later when he conducted LSSO in Bath
Yes. I have a photo. Was it an outside concert?
@@bannan61 Yes and no. It was in Green Park Station, a disused railway station that was converted to a concert and events venue. It had a big glass roof and was still open at one end so it had natural light and noise.
